Challenge #1: Reality

Reality #1: We live in an imprecise world.

Challenge #1: We have flawed data and inaccurate forecasts.

Misconception #1. We think the right thing to do is to fix the flawed data and create more accurate forecasts.

The truth is, if we fix the flawed data and have 100% accurate forecasts, we will still be living in an imprecise world.  There will still be unexpected disruption.

Even if we achieve a point in time where data is flawless, it will not remain perfect for long.

Even if we achieve 100% accurate forecasts, it is not at the necessary level of detail.

So why do we spend so much time and money on these two things? They aren’t ever fully complete. The world does not stop once you achieve your momentary objective.

While we imagine a world with no data imperfections and minimal forecast variance, it is always an elusive target and therefore, always our task remains unfinished.

We can never achieve the stability of perfect data and perfect forecast for long.

We must instead seek to align the data (and forecast) that we have with the actions we must take, because of the imprecise (and constantly changing) world in which we live.

So, while you’re delaying the start of a project, here’s a Deep Thought.

Every minute we lose is a minute we lose.
